Getting on the Top Ten

When I was a kid I had the opportunity to play arcade games quite often. Besides the Winner’s Don’t Use Drugs screens illuminating the room, a staple of old arcade games was the top ten leader board.

It would reset every night when the machines were inevitably unplugged but for a brief moment I could be reigning champion of the game.

Until one of my friends topped my high score.

The best part of getting the high score is adding your initials with some exciting fanfare. Classics such as ASS and POO could be displayed if only a top score could be beaten.

I’ve purposely set the bottom score pretty low so unless you actively try to avoid gaining any points and die as quickly as possible, you’ll rank in. I wanted to encourage players to try and beat their previous score with a reward of ranking in and hearing a short little ditty.

In the end, I feel like the leader board is crucial for a game this short to have any replayability. I know I’ve loaded up the game a few times just to try and beat my top score–currently at 71,850 points.
